Summary
Effective January 1, 2006, California will begin using a permit system for all wineries who ship wine directly to consumers. Wineries outside of California will be required to pay a $10 fee and complete Type 82 form to legally direct ship to consumers in the state. There are no volume limits under the new law. California wineries will not have to take any action to comply with the new law. California wineries do not have to pay the $10 fee or apply for a permit. Wineries located outside of California must contact the California Board of Equalization for tax payment instructions.
