Tennessee opened for direct shipping on July 1, 2009. Wineries must apply for a direct shipper's license and register to pay taxes before shipping to consumers in TN. Licensed direct shippers may ship a maximum of 1 case per month to a consumer and cannot send more than 3 cases to a consumer during a calendar year. There is an intital non-refundable application fee of $300 and the annual cost of the license is $150. The license is valid for one year from the date issued. Sales and excise taxes must be paid. Applications and list of dry area "Do Not Ship Zip Codes" are posted under Relevant Documents. Wineries may not ship to consumers in municipalities that do not allow off-premise sales. Shipping wine to consumers without a permit is classified as a felony in TN.
